Opelika, Alabama — one of the fastest-growing
communities in the state and a recognized destination for business and quality
of life — is building momentum through a comprehensive economic development
strategy called Forward Opelika. This five-year initiative, led by the Opelika
Chamber of Commerce in partnership with local and regional stakeholders, aligns
public, private, and civic resources to strengthen business growth, talent
attraction, and community resilience.
Forward Opelika: A Strategic Economic Initiative
The Forward Opelika Economic Growth Initiative
is a multi-year, $3.865 million strategic plan designed to address
Opelika’s most pressing economic challenges and opportunities. The initiative
focuses on elevating job growth, attracting and aligning talent, cultivating a
vibrant business ecosystem, and creating a centralized business hub to support
local enterprises.
Key goals of the plan include:
- Attracting and retaining a skilled workforce to meet
employer needs across sectors.
- Supporting business expansion and quality job creation.
- Establishing a central business hub to foster
innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship.
A New Business Resource Center Fosters Innovation
As part of Forward Opelika, the chamber relocated to a
renovated facility that now serves as a Business Resource Center and
collaborative hub for entrepreneurs, employers, and workforce partners.
Located in a historic building, the center includes training spaces, meeting
rooms, executive offices, and business support services designed to help
companies grow and connect with talent.
This modern space — co-located with Auburn-Opelika
Tourism — hosts workforce development programs, networking events, leadership
training, and entrepreneurial resources, strengthening Opelika’s economic
infrastructure and community assets.
Industrial Site Readiness and Growth
Beyond Forward Opelika, strategic infrastructure
investments are enhancing the city’s competitive edge for industrial growth.
Opelika has secured state SEEDS (Site Evaluation and Economic Development
Strategy) grants to prepare pad-ready industrial sites within the Northeast
Opelika Industrial Park, including a 125-acre cleared and graded site
designed to attract advanced manufacturing and other employers.
Located along the Interstate 85 corridor with access to
CSX rail and proximity to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport,
these industrial sites position Opelika to compete for job-creating investments
across the Southeastern U.S.
Supporting Business, Jobs, and Community Vitality
The Forward Opelika initiative and related economic
growth efforts support a thriving, multifaceted local economy:
- A proactive plan to attract and retain talent that
meets employer needs.
- Expanded business support infrastructure and
entrepreneurial resources.
- Industrial site readiness that enhances competitiveness
for new employers.
- Community collaboration that unites businesses,
residents, and leaders around long-term goals.
These developments encourage continued job creation,
investment, and quality-of-life improvements for residents and future residents
alike.
A City Moving Forward Together
With the Forward Opelika economic strategy
guiding intentional growth, investment in industrial readiness, and
community-focused partnerships, Opelika is not just expanding — it’s
strengthening the foundations for long-term prosperity.
Living here means being part of a community where
businesses thrive, talent grows, and new opportunities emerge every day.
